07: Purpose
Every single person in this life needs purpose. I think a lot of people make the mistake of believing that purpose is derived solely from working a job they’re passionate about. I have recently begun to see that purpose is actually primarily derived from relationships.
The only reason that a field of work makes one feel useful is when that field of work is involved in the good of mankind. The feeling of purpose comes from helping someone, making the world a better place for certain individuals (the poor, the hungry, the less fortunate). This idea also weaves its way through our own close, personal relationships.
Why is it a universal desire to have a family? Because a relationship of love and commitment to another person is useful. Why? Because it leads to bringing forth a legacy. And why is it purposeful to have a legacy? So that you can raise up other humans in the ways of love, passion, helpfulness, usefulness and purpose that will do the work in this world that matters.
Being without relationships and being an unproductive cog in society’s wheel often go hand-in-hand. So talk to that stranger on the street, the barrister at the cafe or that old woman who calls herself ‘mom’ sitting in your living room.
